You excitement turns to horror when the move turns out to be rather disturbing. A film that will give you a strong message. The almost all-female cast and their dedication while playing sex workers in 1947. But it comes as a surprise when Chunky Pandey is the best thing in the film! We’ve heard about Begum Jaan as the feminist film that it is. When you enter the hall, to watch a Vidya Balan starrer movie, your expectations are high. The music, sets, costumes and cinematography have added value to the film. There are some talented actors in the cast and they have all done well to bring to life this tragic story. The narrative is engaging due to the realistic ambience, the acting and the dialogue. The film is a major triumph for Director Srijit Mukherjee and Vidya Balam as they bring to life the turbulence and tragedy in the plot. The film ends with an old song "Wo subah kabhi to aayegi" in the background as the whorehouse burns down to make way for the partition to be made. The govt officials then use force to throw out Vidya and the inmates with tragic consequences for all as the film takes the form of a classic Shakespearean tragedy. ![]() She seeks the help of the local raja Naseeruddin Shah who has been protecting her so far but of no avail. Govt officials then had issued evacuation order to them but Begum jaan is adamant on not vacating for emotional reasons. This is a serious subject set during partition time when the Radcliffe line was being implemented and it so happened that a whorehouse controlled by begum jaan ( Vidya Balan) was in its way. To me Vidya Balan has over played herself and is too loud. She utters hard hitting and meaningful lines to convey her anguish. The reviewer refrains himself to put in print because of their crudeness. The cast is too large to be handled and leaves little scope to be leaving an imprint. How come there's a brothel in no man's land? They are located in the vicinity of the clientele.Īt best Begam Jaan provokes ,no more.It doesn't talk about rehabilitation and skill building of the victims. #Watch begum jaan release date freeHere the exploiters are the nobility, the politicians ,the government machinery, the louts ,the commoners and even women themselves. The benefactor Begum( Vidya Balan) rules the brothel with an iron hand.To her emotional relationships are only an impediment in their 'dhanda'.There's no free lunch. The vested interests have to be comforted both in cash and kind.Given a choice none wants to be there where they are placed. All end up in maintaining status quo.All want to squeeze them to the last penny no matter the pretence to the contrary. For them self help is the best help even if it's offensive. After all the women are at the receiving end at all fronts -domestic,office spaces ,educational institutions et al.They are not empowered as yet. They continue to be vulnerable. All kinds of vested interests are exploiting them. The context could have been contemporary and the locale an urban one. To me the partition back drop is incidental and could have been omitted. Though Begum Jaan is the Hindi version of Srijit Mukherjee's Bengali Rajkahani,it provokes the predominant male society to look within. In one word it 'shames them'.īoth confine to the time period of partition ,where even a brothel has to be partitioned whether it be at the Bengal front( Rajkahani) or at the Punjab front herein. The voice over of Amitabh Bachchan informs the viewers that a commission has been given the onerous task to determine the boundaries in the ground. The inmates of this brothel are determined not to comply. Why? After all they have been brought up and have been doing their business at this premises. The fear of being uprooted and being homeless gives them the courage to thwart the move ![]()
